The feature race of the weekend is the Irish Derby today at 5:20 from the Curragh.
Aidan O’Brien is the trainer to follow here.
He has won this race 6 out of the last 10 times and he’s won it 11 times in total.
He trains 5 of the 9 runners in the field today and he must have a great chance of winning it again – he’s got the favourite in this race in Wings of Eagles who won the Epsom Derby under Padraig Beggy.
Who to back? Irish Derby Tips
He was a 40/1 outsider then but it looked like the result was no fluke, beating some top class horses and was given a very patient ride.
He stormed down the outside inside the final two furlongs and beat stablemate Cliffs of Moher and Cracksman cosily. Padraig Beggy loses the ride today due to stable politics.
Cracksman 40/1 to win (was 11/4)
Ryan Moore takes over the ride on this son of Pour Moi.
It’s interesting to note that Pour Moi was also a shock winner of the Derby. If the Epsom Derby win hasn’t taken much out of Wings of Eagles he is sure to go close today. Harzand did the Derby double last season and this one is looking to match that feat.
He does have stiff competition though.
The O’Brien trio of Capri, The Anvil and Douglas Macarthur ran down the field in the Derby. Capri’s form isn’t good enough to win this race and the Anvil looks too slow. Douglas Macarthur had previously won a Derby trial and looked good doing so.
He went off at a crazy pace in the Derby and he ran incredibly well to finish where he did. If he’s ridden with more restraint today I can see him getting much closer to the others from that race. He did have a hard race though.
Cracksman beat Permian in the Derby trial at Epsom and looked impressive doing so.
He was my selection for the Epsom Derby after that performance and he ran a stormer when coming 3rd to Wings of Eagles.
Cracksman was the most inexperienced horse in the race and I don’t think the race was run to suit. He chased a very fast gallop under Frankie Dettori and the horse did incredibly well to stay on to be 3rd.
A lot of good judges said that this horse was the one to take out of the race as one for the future. I think he’ll get much closer today to Wings of Eagles and he could well reverse the placings. Frankie Dettori misses the ride on him but Pat Smullen is an able deputy.
The horse that Cracksman beat in the Derby Trial was an impressive winner at Royal Ascot since so the form has been boosted. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Cracksman and I think he can take this en route to great season.
The French raider Waldgeist is the interesting one in this field. This horse finished 2nd on season reappearance and then ran 2nd to Brametot in the French Derby over 2f shorter than this trip. This one is bred to do better over further and the step up in trip will really suit today. This course will also be more to his liking. It’s hard to weight up his form with some of these though. I don’t rate any of the others in this field good enough to win this race.
This race looks a three way go between Wings of Eagles, Cracksman and Waldgeist. Wings Of Eagles was impressive in the Derby but he had the race run to suit then. The race didn’t go Cracksman’s way at Epsom and I think he’ll have it more to his liking today.
I think he can reverse placings with Wings of Eagles and confirm placings with the others from the Epsom Derby.
Waldgeist will put up a good fight but CRACKSMAN is my selection at odds of 3/1 – or get the 40/1 on offer if you don’t have a Paddy Power account here.
