Constitution Hill has been installed as the favourite for the Champion Hurdle at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival following a stunning Flat debut victory at Southwell Racecourse.

Eyebrows were raised when Nicky Henderson opted to send his stable star to Southwell for a £40,000 1m4f novice contest, but the decision was emphatically vindicated. Ridden by Oisin Murphy, the nine year old powered clear to score by nine lengths in a performance that reignited belief in his exceptional talent.

After falling in three of his previous four starts over hurdles, there had been growing concern that his peak might have passed. His dominant display on the level has at least reminded observers of the raw pace and power that once made him untouchable in the two mile division.

Previously available at around 4/1 for the Champion Hurdle, Constitution Hill now heads the market ahead of rivals such as Lossiemouth, Brighterdaysahead and The New Lion.

There are still legitimate questions about his jumping, and a Flat outing just weeks before a championship hurdle is hardly conventional preparation. However, Henderson’s bold move may yet prove inspired if Constitution Hill can translate that Southwell sparkle back over hurdles on day one at Prestbury Park.
